Incident Report

Summary

Between 21 October 2024 and 07 November 2024, a subset of Gemini enterprise users experienced elevated error rate when attempting to use Calendar, Keep, and Tasks extensions from the Gemini App on Web.

We sincerely apologize to our Gemini customers for the disruption. This is not the level of quality and reliability we strive to offer you, and we are taking immediate steps to prevent such disruptions in the future.

Root Cause

On 21 October 2024, Google began rolling out a feature to support Calendar, Tasks and Keep extensions on Gemini app (gemini.google.com) for Enterprise Customers that have Workspace extensions in Gemini set to “On.” Due to the gradual rollout process, the feature was enabled for individual domains on different dates, resulting in varying impact timeframes for different customers.

The issue was caused by an incorrect configuration settings on the backend server that controls the rollout of the new feature. These settings determine things like how many users can access the feature at once, and how the feature interacts with other parts of the system. The incorrect configuration prevented the Calendar, Keep, and Tasks extensions from being fully enabled for some enterprise users on Gemini Web, despite the extensions being visible.

Remediation and Prevention

Google engineers were alerted to the issue via a customer support case on 29 October 2024 at 18:18 US/Pacific. Following initial investigations from support, the issue was escalated to our engineering team on 05 November 2024. Upon identifying the issue, engineers promptly disabled the controlling setting on the backend server, gradually enabled the correct configuration setting, and finally re-enabled the controlling setting on the backend server, thereby resolving the issue.

Google is committed preventing a repeat of this issue in the future and is completing the following actions:

  • Enhanced Monitoring: We are enhancing real-time monitoring of Gemini feature rollouts to ensure prompt detection of any configuration issues.
  • Improved Rollout Sequencing: We are refining the rollout sequence to guarantee that extensions are fully enabled before being made available to customers.

Detailed Description of Impact

Between 21 October 2024 09:38 US/Pacific and 07 November 2024 09:04 US/Pacific, a subset of users may have observed the following error messages when trying to use Calendar, Keep, and Tasks extensions from the Gemini app. These messages were the responses by Gemini:

  • ‘I can't assist you with that, as I am only a language model.’
  • ‘I can’t access your Google Calendar because of privacy and security reasons, but I can help you find this information!’
